“The magic of colour and symbols – ciphers merging into pictorial scripts.”

Petra Winterkamp

Artistic Signature

Petra Winterkamp lives and works in Munich. In her paintings, colour, form, and symbols merge into complex compositions that open associative spaces between abstraction and script. Her so-called “script paintings” arise from spontaneous gestures, rhythmic lines, and intuitively placed harmonies of colour – expressions of an inner language that unfolds beyond words. Each work becomes a process of tracing and uncovering signs that appear and vanish within the flow of painting.

The interplay of magic, structure, and emotion runs like a red thread through her oeuvre. Winterkamp is fascinated by the transitions between order and chaos, by the invisible that becomes perceptible through the act of painting. Her works invite the viewer to pause, to decipher, and to discover personal meanings. The result is a world of timeless imagery – poetic yet powerful – fragments of a universal visual language.

Areas

of Artistic Practice

Munich Studio

Her studio is located in Munich – this is where new works are created through an intensive exploration of material, symbols and color.

Studio

Munich

In Petra Winterkamp’s Munich studio, works emerge in which colour, symbols and history are interwoven. Painting here becomes an archaeological exploration: layer upon layer, the artist applies pigments, gypsum, ash and gold leaf – materials reminiscent of stone, frescoes and ancient walls. Her surfaces are at once fragile and powerful, telling stories of time, transience and rediscovery.

Winterkamp draws inspiration from ancient excavation sites, from ruins and the traces of past cultures. Fascinated by the Nebra Sky Disc, by Etruscan frescoes and medieval palimpsests, she translates their mysterious symbolism into a contemporary visual language. Each work becomes a fragment that points to another place – a place of memory and wonder. Thus, her studio becomes a space of transformation, where history, myth and colour merge into one.

As Franz Marc once wrote:

Recognise, my friends, what pictures are – the appearance in another place.”

In this sense, Petra Winterkamp’s works are invitations to embark on a journey – to places that continue to move us long after we have seen them.
